Know the Trick, Before You Click
Words: Mark Mabuna

Some people would start clicking their cameras a few hundred times without even capturing the shot that they really like. Others may think that they can only take great photos with a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera. Having an expensive and a high quality equipment is really an advantage but why get intimidated if you only have a 3.2 mega pixel point-and-shoot camera? Others may keep taking a few more pictures but they all end up in frustration.

Can't wait to take great pictures yourself but you just don't know where and how to start? Wait up, before you take your next shot! Here are some tips that can help you. For starters, whether you have a DSLR or a 3.2 mega pixel point-and-shoot camera, either way you could still work wonders only if you would begin with the basics of photography. Do not neglect the basics. You won't become a great photographer in a blink of an eye. As you start, you may enrol in a class, take workshops, or better yet, buy and learn from photography books. (Some can be bought at a very cheap price, so keep an eye on book sales). Know what aperture, shutter speed and ISO (speed) are for. Understanding these terms really gives you the confidence in your shots. Hold your camera as comfortably as you can and make sure to develop a steady hand. Be reminded that good timing is inevitable. Those buttons in your camera wouldn't be there for no reason, so it is important to know each of their functions by heart. Take note of your camera's limits and capabilities in order make the most out of it. Read the manual. (Although most of us are guilty trying to avoid this part, just do not forget to carefully study the manual before you decide to throw it away). Put these things in practice and as you progress, learn from constructive criticisms and start to learn new techniques while incorporating your artistic side in each shot. It really takes lots of time and practice but keep in mind that all your hard work would eventually pay off if you have determination

To sum it up, here are some pieces of good advice from Brother Hermes Singson, a professional photographer who also wants to share his knowledge to people who have the same passion for photography.

"Basically, to take good photographs does not depend so much on the camera you use; it depends more with you on how well you will use what you know and what you have learned. So have patience, practice and never stop learning." HMS

He is definitely right. You do not become a pro at an instant; it's all about the experience and the continuous learning process.  We should know the basics, the foundation of good photography.  Be open to all good advice and suggestions you get from other people and don't take the credit all to yourself. Real achievement comes when you realize that you owe everything to GOD who supplies your very strength, talents and abilities.
